Google vulva bike, and you will find a slew of articles that discuss this woman and her bike. Mimosa Pale, of Helsinki had decided that the world was a bit misogynistic and phallocentric. So, she created a vulva shield for her bike taxi and offers free rides around town a couple times a week.
Now, the story is pretty old, and i am sure you may have already heard of Pale and her lovely bike. What strikes me is the tone and content of the articles that discuss this protest. Every article i have found actually ridicules Pale, pushes her bike to the ‘lunatic fringe’ and generally shoves vulvas back into our mini undies-sized closet.
I find it fascinating that each of the articles gives us the guilty token lines. You know, the, “I’m not racist, one of my best friends is black” bullshit. There is an overwhelming tone of “we love feminists, but….”
All i can think is that every year we see a thousand marching penises on halloween, and countless outlet/plug costumes. the penis is everywhere we go, from absolut bottles to lolipops. And yet, one woman wants to make a small statement about that fact, and she is the weird scary radical. can i get a WTF in the house?
I am all for public appropriateness. I am for suave, sophisticated behavior and tact. I also don’t think that anyone should walk around town with their shirts slung over their smelly backs while window shopping, especially when people with breasts would be arrested for it.
But Pale is making a statement. And the constant backlash is just and example of why her work is not to be mocked, but instead, supported.
